Now that the Democratic and Republican conventions are over, we can see the stark difference between the two parties on climate change more clearly than ever. The one time climate change was mentioned at the GOP convention was to double down on denial. In distinct contrast, action on climate change was mentioned by over 60 speakers at the Democrat’s convention. The question is what can ordinary citizens like you and me do to ensuring that Democrats are in charge in 2021?
Analysis of the House races shows that in all likelihood Democrats will retain control of the House. So the fight is really for the Senate and the White House. Depending on the analysis, there are anywhere from 5 to 9 toss-up Senate races. At Rebuild Climate we have chosen to focus on the most likely 5: Colorado, Arizona, Maine, Montana and North Carolina. We need to ensure that the Democrat’s challenging the GOP incumbents are successful. And obviously, Trump must be defeated. There are links on our Campaigns page to each of these campaign websites. You can visit each one to donate and/or sign up to volunteer. We highly encourage you to do both if you can manage it.
Secondly, we must ensure that folks concerned about the environment get to the polls. This is why we suggest that you volunteer with the Environmental Voter Project (EVP). The EVP is using sophisticated analytics to find folks in swing states that are concerned about the environment but who are not regular voters. They then enable volunteers to reach out to these inconsistent environmental voters by phone using a smartphone app. It’s all automated and you don’t use your own phone number. The beauty of it is that you don’t have to convince these voters to vote for any particular candidate. All you are working on is ensuring that they vote by building a relationship with them. Each of these prospective voters will get multiple contacts from EVP volunteers before the election. And you can be one of the folks to make this happen. These environmental voters could make all the difference to the outcome of the election.
Let’s be clear. 2021 could be the year that our country makes serious headway on climate change, but it all hinges on Democrats winning in November. Get involved and be the difference!
